A surface parking lot on Western will soon become the newest wing of the Pike Place Market, known as the MarketFront. It will house more vendors, senior housing, parking, and retail that will more than likely be leased entirely to food purveyors.
This lot once held the Municipal Market Building but in 1974 it burned and was torn down leaving only remnants of the foundation in it’s place. Now, 40 years after the fire, with funding from the city and state for parking and with the viaduct set to come down, the Market is able to move forward with plans to build on the site. Construction is slated to begin in May.
